In the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio, suburban housewife Mary Hartman seeks the kind of domestic perfection promised by Reader’s Digest and TV commercials. Instead she finds herself suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune: mass murders, low-flying airplanes and waxy yellow buildup on her kitchen floor.

Mary is watching TV in the kitchen. Her sister, Cathy Shumway, enters the house. Cathy and Mary talk about yellow build up, and debate if the floor has any on it. Loretta Haggers enters. She says that the Lombardi family was murdered along with their two goats and eight chickens, and soon they debate what hte name of the street is that they live on. A reporter from the Fernwood local newspaper enters the house. He asks them some questions about the Lombardis. Meanwhile, at the workplace, Tom Hartman and Charlie Haggers are eating. They turn on the radio and hear about the Lombardi murder. Charlie quickly turns it off because he's eating and does not want to hear about the murder of people. George Shumway, father of Mary and Cathy, enters. They talk about the Lombardis. The father of the family had worked at the plant but only for a short time. Mary arrives at the police station and meets Sgt. Dennis Foley. She doesn't understand what he means by 'flasher' at first. Grandpa Larkin comes out with no pants on, but he is wearing a jacket. He claims he didn't flash anyone. According to Sgt. Foley, he flashed a cafeteria lady on the playground of an elementary school. Grandpa Larkin says he was only taking a walk, but Sgt. Foley asks him why he wasn't wearing any pants. Grandpa Larkin says that his pants are being cleaned. Grandpa Larkin and Mary then leave. Meanwhile, at the Shumway home, Martha Shumway is in the kitchen when Cathy enters. Martha asks if Cathy went to school. Cathy says she couldn't because she had to help an Armenian bartender get to bartending school across the street. George comes home. Mary and Grandpa Larkin enter. Mary tells the family what Grandpa Larkin did. Cathy and George know what she's talking about, but Martha asks what he was flashing. Grandpa Larkin goes throuh the house looking for peanut butter.

Episode 003

Mary is being interviewed by Reporter Harold Clemens on the Lombardi murders. Mary talks about a book she once bought about psychology, which was guaranteed to improve her emotional health. Harold asks if it did. Mary says yes, because she realized while reading the book that she needed glasses. She then tells him the ""hillarious story"" of when she and Tom first met. He had turned the water on a water fountain way up high and it had gone up Mary's nostrils. Mary's daughter, Heather, comes home from school. She says she's not hungry because she ate four boxes of M&Ms. Heather had been at the Lombardis the day of the murder, and he asks her some questions. Heather complains of cramps, and Mary sends her to her room. Meanwhile, at the Haggers house, Loretta is rehearsing an act. Charlie enters. He wants to hear the act again, even though he's heard it a hundred times. She sings ""It Feels So Good When You Feel Me"" to him. Tom and Mary are in their bedroom. Tom says Mary looks cute cutting

Mary, Tom, Martha, Cathy, and George are in a courtroom with Grandpa Raymond Larkin. Raymond enters and accuses the Shumways of trying to get rid of him. Martha says she would never do that to her pop. The judge thinks that Grandpa Larkin is crazy since he can't remember anything he does. Larkin does not want to go back to the Shumways, so Tom says Grandpa Larkin can stay with them. Grandpa Larkin says they have a lumpy couch, but it's better then anything 'Shumway' can offer. Tom, Mary, and Raymond arrive at the house. Grandpa wants to see Heather, but Mary prevents him from seeing her. Tom gets the stuff for Grandpa to sleep on, such as sheets for the couch. The next morning, Grandpa, Mary, and Tom are eating breakfest. They have conceived an alibi to tell Heather for why Grandpa Raymond Larkin is with them--his room is being painted. Loretta continues to sing at the Lounge. She sings ""I Fall to Pieces"" by Patsy Cline, but by this point everyone except Charlie has left. After the show, Loretta and Charlie sit down and talk. Charlie tells Loretta that Tom has been asking him questions about them. Loretta comments that Mary isn't getting enough Vitamin L (Vitamin 'Love') from Tom. At the Hartman residence, Tom and Mary are in bed. Mary tells him about Sgt. Foley asking if he can interview Heather. Tom checks on Heather, and the phone rings. Mary answers it. It is a man who's voice is not identifiable. He asks if Heather lives in the house to make sure he hsa the right one. Mary is made nervous by this and tells Tom about the call. Tom tells her it was probably some prank call. Tom and Mary are about to do things in bed (Wink Wink Nudge Nudge) when Tom says he's losing his 'momentum'. Mary suggests they take a hot shower. Mary enters the library. She sees that the librarian on duty is a man and feels embarresed about getting her books on sex. She asks him where the female librarian went, and he replies that she has done her work for the day. Mary wants to get the books but is still embarresed. He feels that something is wrong and asks her if she is sure these aren't her books. Mary says her friend is Mary Hartman and that she can take the books with her. She leaves the library with the books in a brown paper bag so no one can see the titles. Meanwhile at the factory, it is lunch time. Tom and Charlie sit together and eat their lunch. Charlie says he knows something is wrong between Tom and Mary. Mae enters to tell Charlie she did something concerning the check he got for work. Charlie is made happy because Loretta can record in a studio that night! After Mae leaves, Tom comments on how nice she is. This episode opens with Mary and Cathy sitting at Mary's kitchen table. Mary is in a daze because she can't beleive that her daughter, Heather, would know ANYTHING about the Lombardi murders. She and Cathy debate over whether Ctahy thought it was possible is Heather knew anything about the murders. Heather comes in and decides that she doesn't want to discuss the murders. Mary finally convinces her to spill the beans. Heather says that she knew Saraphena Lombardi. She picked her for her class project partner. Nobody wanted to pick Heather, so Heather picked her. She also reveals something very special: She had a crush on Rocko Lombardi. Heather clues in Mary and Cathy about her visit to the Lombardi house the night of the murders. She says that she saw a man with a gun at the front of the Lombardi house. Stunned, Mary takes Heather to the police. When they get there, Heather says that she wants to go. The episode opens with re-showing the phone scene from the previous episode, but continuing on. It turns out to be a boy who wants to talk to Heather. Mary is overjoyed by this and is talking about how he may have saw her in the paper. Det. Johnson and Heather go off to school. Tom and Mary are left alone. Tom asks her about the sex books. Mary tries to avoid the question. Tom silences her and explains that she humiliated him in front of Charlie with the books. He explains that he never asks anything of Mary. Mary starts to cry. Mary says that she'll do anything Tom wants her to do. Tom just wants it all to be normal. Tom goes out so he can have time to think about their marriage. Loretta enters. She has to borrow bread, milk, sugar, instant coffee, etc. Blanche is making her guilty about buying ANYTHING at Federated ,the grocery store. Charlie comes in. Mary, Tom, Cathy, and her Armenian boyfriend are at Loretta's recording session, while Charlie and an engineer are in a booth. Loretta is singing with her pianist and guitarist accompaning her. Cathy and her Armenian boyfriend make out in front of Mary and Tom. Cathy slips a chocolate covered raisin into her boyfriend's mouth and Mary asks Tom if they can buy some chocolate covered raisins. They keep having to have many takes for Loretta's song because there are either interruptions or technical difficulties. While she is singing her song entitled ""Mama Was a Beauty Operator"", Mae and Ralph enter. Loretta and Charlie greet them. Mae and Ralph then sit down in the audience booth. Mae says hi to Tom. Mary asks Tom who she is. He tells her she works in pay roll at the factory. Mary asks what happened to the other heavyset lady who had to wear corrective shoes. Tom says she had kidney faliure. The episode starts with Tom hanging up the phone in the lunch area of the factory he works at. Charlie enters and goes to the phone. He asks Tom if he told Mary about the bomb scare. Tom tells him he didn't, but he did tell her he wasn't coming home after work. Charlie replies with an ""Oh."" This frustrates Tom because of the way Charlie said it. Tom grabs Charlie and forces him to sit down. Charlie tells him that even a rock can tell that there is something wrong between Tom and Mary. Tom says it's not like he's not interested in Mary--there's just something missing. George enters and says the bomb scare is over. The episode opens with Mary, George, and Loretta walking into the police station. They start asking about Heather and her wherabouts. George starts to panic because all the police could do is send out on APB. Mary tells Sgt. Foley about Tom disappearing also. Mary starts going on and on about how Tom was upset the morning before. Sgt. Foley starts to ask about what Tom was mad about. Loretta tells George about the song about Mary's problem. Loretta and George leave. George yells the familiar ""Mary Hartman! Mary Hartman!."" This episode opens with Loretta on the Haggers porch. She asks Charlie about his breakfast. She goes into the house as Charlie follows her. She starts to tell him about his beautiful breakfast. Loretta begins talking about postponing the trip to Nashville for Mary's sake. The doctor calls and tells Charlie that Loretta is pregnant. He tells Loretta and they have a nice, big hug. She says that they have to go to Nashville by the end of the week, but Charlie disagrees. Loretta explains to him, but he is still amazed by the fact that they might have a baby. Tom comes in and Charlie tells him the good news. Tom starts to tell them about Heather and Trudy's adventure. At Mary's kitchen, Loretta is trying to tell Mary to perk up. Sgt. Martha is laying on the floor with a glass of water. She can't believe Heather was with a dangerous maniac! Mary tells her she's not with him anymore, but Heather reminds them that she has to go back to Davey Jessup at 6:30. This makes Martha almost faint again, and Mary screams at her not to. Mary asks Heather if she made it up, and Heather replies that she's being honest. She says she found out that the boy she was going to the Disco with was only going so he could be on TV, so she ran away with Trudy Weathersby, but Davey made them go to an old store. Davey continues to hold the gun to Mary's head. He asks where Heather is, and she once again explains that she came in her place. Davey says he wanted Heather to come.He then asks if she brought the $100,000, she tells her she didn't. Davey and Mary sit down on a matress. Mary asks if it's a real gun, because she once saw this skit on ""The Howard Consel Show"" where Tina Louis had a gun and when she pulled the trigger a sign came out that said 'BANG!'. Davey shoots off the gun to show the gun is real. Davey appologizes for kidnapping Trudy & Heather. Mary tells him that the car is in the repair shop. They hear sirens outside. The episode opens with Davey telling Mary about his childhood and his father. He mentions how we worked for Mr. Lombardi. He talks about how he would tell his children and wife ""mean things."" Then Davey asks Mary to bring a note out to the police. Mary is overjoyed, but Davey reassures her that he'll be watching her the whole time. Mary reads the note: Unless my demands are met in 30 minutes, I'm gonna kill Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. On the outside, as Mary comes out of the Chinese Laundry, Loretta and everyone start to cheer. On the outside, Clete Mizenheimer is interviewing Rick Nudley, a car salesman. Heather complains about her stomach, and Martha decides to take her home. Rick says that they finally found the car in Portoville. Davey says that he wants her car to be completely fresh. He wants clean tires, and nothing over 15 miles on it. Jesus is telling us about the tension surrounding the situation. Rev. Standfast comes over in his luxurous Lincoln. The Rev. obviously gets scared of the whole fact that Davey has a gun. He gets a blowhorn and starts to talk to Davey about what he is doing. Standfast starts to read scripture through the blowhorn. Davey isn't listening to a word he says, since him and Mary are playing a game. The car finally arrives. Davey makes a new demand: He wants Standfast to come into the store with a stack of bibles, and to swear on them that the police will not follow Davey. Marth, Grandpa Larkin, and Heather are watching Clete Mizenheimer and Jesus Jarrera report from the abandoned chinese laundry where Mary is being held by Little Davey Jessup. Jesus reports that there's a 'flash flash! We have just learned that one of Fernwood's finest is attempting to enter the rear of the chinese laundry. He is reported to be armed and dangerous, and so is the killer. So in case of any bloodshed or death, Clete and I will be right here on target!' Heather is scared that her mother Mary is going to be hurt. Martha reassures her by telling her by telling her that they wouldn't allow that much violence on television. Meanwhile, in the Chinese laundry, Davey and Mary are sleeping when a sound makes Davey wake up. This wakes up Mary, and they go to the back of the Chinese laundry, which has a window in it. Mary sits in bed, talking to herself. She's thinking of what to say to Tom. Tom enters. He appologizes for being late. Mary asks why Tom hasn't made love to her in the last eight weeks. Mary asks if he isn't in the mood or if he finds her repulsive. Mary tells Tom she loves him. Meanwhile, Loretta and Charlie drive in their car. Charlie asks Loretta if she wants to stop. She says no--she wants to make up for the time they lost. Charlie asks Loretta if he really is going to give the hillbillies' song to the people at Nashville. Loretta says yes because she promised him. Loretta starts singing a song about their situation with the hillbillies. Charlies asks if Loretta wants to sleep. Loretta tells him he doesn't want to. Mary's chicken soup makes the evening news. The time has come for Steve to gesture goodbye. Mary's guilt gets Leroy a Cadillac.

George gets a ""visitor"" and then a ""surprise."" The Hartmans get a call from Tom's ex's ex. George returns home in a panic.

Mary plays hostess to a funeral and eulogizes the late Leroy Fedders. Tom and Mary make plans for the hypothetical. Tom has a surprise for Mae.

Mae's reunion is a big headache for Tom and it's all Mary's fault. Loretta and Charlie get some not so friendly news. Loretta makes a spectacular comeback, in more ways than one
