Maris leaves his village and joins a Wehrmacht auxiliary unit. Together with other villagers, he receives weapons and becomes a soldier. They live in barracks inside a monastery. The spiritual nature of the place almost justifies crimes that thetroops commit and, in a way, grants them approval from higher forces. The boundary between the Exalted and the Terrible disappears.
