Making Out is a British television series, shown by the BBC between 1989 and 1991. The series, created by Franc Roddam, written by Debbie Horsfield, mixed comedy and drama in its portrayal of the women who worked on the factory floor at New Lyne Electronics in Manchester, tackling the personal lives of the characters as well as wider issues of recession, redundancy and retrenchment as the factory goes through various crises and take-overs. The music for the series was composed by New Order. The main theme for the show is an adaptation of the song "Vanishing Point". There is a specific mix of this song called the Making Out Mix.

Queenie and Rosie prepare for motherhood.

Donna is getting worried about her husband Gordon's mystical union with Willow, and Queenie advises her to give him a taste of his own medicine. Jill is finding life difficlt, and her two children seem to be drifting into their own worlds. Bernie and Carol May have taken up Norma's offer of a partnershipin the company, but Carol May's previous workmates are increasingly hostile to her new management status. Frankie attempts to get romantic with Pauline.

Carol May's husband Colin switches obsessions from fish to dance in one pirouette, while Queenie's long-lost teenage son turns up on the doorstep.

Carol May suffers from husband Colin's irrational behaviour and violent outbursts, and Norma reveals that she has given up men. Pauline is coming to terms with her breast cancer, and Queenie and Donna are back at work, with Bernie running the new creche, much to Norma's horror. Jill tries to sort out her own domestic life with Swedish tennis coach Axel and deal with her 16 year old daughter's request to marry a young Asian businessman.

Pauline is still going through chemotherapy and the girls arrange a night out for her in a club. Queenie is worried about telling Chunky the truth about their new lodger Tyrone, her long-lost son from a previous relationship. Donna is worried about husband Gordon taking baby Jessica away "to nurture her psychic core", while Queenie gives her some sound advice about Gordon and his relationship with Willow.

Pauline is battling with her illness and, with the support of her colleagues, is determined to live as normal a life as possible. The chance to take part in the dance team is one she will not pass up, especially as Tommy Docherty is awarding the £2,000 prize. Queenie, is still struggling to admit the truth about her long-lost son- the child she had at 16. Carol May has won a three-year order worth £450,000 to the company, and is facing up to the reality of her husband Colin's breakdown and his return home. Norma is torn between her career and her girlfriend Trina, who is moving to London. Gordon is moving back with Donna, while Jill abandons her Swedish tennis ace for a more settled existence.

Rex is losing his grip on the business and his marriage to co-director Stella. Donna, heavily-pregnant, takes up natural childbirth classes, Pauline becomes very "grren" conscious, and Jill is having to cope with Husband Ray's new girlfriend. Norma spots severe discrepancies in the accounts and a dodgy stock of solvent spells trouble for the workers on the factory floor, especially Donna.

Rex has to face a disgruntled workforce when the company's wages account is grossly overdrawn, and Stella and Norma are forced into an unwilling alliance to salvage what they can with the VAT putting the pressure on. Queenie's husband Chyunky has a hare-brained idea for making money, and Jill has an embarrassing time at her daughter's 15th birthday party.

Rex.s departure leaves a legacy of chaos and a few regrets for Stella and the factory girls. Queenie tries to raise bailf for Chunky and Pauline voices her suspicions to Jill that Frankie is having an affair with his works secretary, Maureen.

Donna realises motherhood is not quite what she expected and shows signs of missing her workmates, while Jill tries to leave her past behind and goes out for a night on the town with Pauline.

Trouble at home for Pauline and Carol May.

Last in the series. Jill contemplates whether to marry her footballer boyfriend; Queenie is heavily pregnant; Carole May is back with her husband; and, the arrival of robot assembly machines causes a riot and hilarity.

Jill has a young family, and an unemployed husband and gets a job on the assembly line at Lyne Electronics.

Rex is looking for voluntary redundancies and has his eye on Sally who is past r etirement age. Despite the best efforts of the other girls, there seems nothing they can do so they decide to cheer her up with a night on the town.

Friday, sees the arrival of an unexpected visitor at the factory. Mr. Kim Soo Y oung is the son of the chairman of Yongchan Electronics and Queenie is to look after him.

Donna conceals her pregnancy test, Queenie sells exotic lingerie at the workbench. The sudden arrival of a Korean business delegation starts speculation and rumour of an imminent take-over.

Modern management techniques hit Lyne Electronics, with unexpected consequences for Klepto and Simon.

Chunky's aunt dies, leaving a small legacy to his 'wife'. But she had forgotten that he never remarried Reluctant to forfeit such a windfall, Queenie decides to solve all Chunky's problems, and plans are set in motion for the imminent celebration.

Mr Parrott the Korean's efficiency expert criticises the management of Lyne Elec tronics, and Bella Grout is brought into to supervise the business administratio n. New streamlined practices include ID tags for the workers, and minimum tea breaks.

Bella's regime comes to an end when the partnership with the Koreans falls throu gh. Initial jubilation turns to dismay when Beachcroft announces that the factory is to close down at the end of the week.
